Surma Father
with Children, Ethiopia
A
Surma father shares a tender moment with his children. In all African
societies, childhood is a time for learning responsibilities and skills
that enable children to contribute to their communities. Early work training,
however, is balanced with time for children to develop creativity through
imaginative play. Surma children find expression through body painting
and the imitation of animals in their games.
