Female Companions of Maasai Warriors, Kenya Young Maasai men celebrating their graduation into warriorhood are adoringly accompanied by young girls. This is the one time in their lives when the girls are able to enjoy freely chosen relations. Traditionally each girl may select three lovers from among the warriors. The first is called the sweetheart, the second takes over when the first is not present, and the third may court her favors when the first and second are absent. There is no jealousy among the three lovers, but they must respect each other's status in relation to the girl.
